Author's
note:
This picture book about coping with loss is my most special writing memory,
since it was my first attempt at composing a story for children. After sending
out my manuscript to around 15 publishers, and receiving incredibly helpful
feedback from several editors whose words helped me with my revision process,
I found a home for my book with a very devoted and family-oriented publishing
house, Centering Corporation. My dear and talented friend, Mary McConnell,
was selected to be illustrator, and her delicate, lovely pencil sketches illuminate
the story. My children and family were models for Mary's drawings in the book,
so I see their faces as I turn the pages. I sold the film rights to A Quilt
for Elizabeth to FilmFair Communications in Hollywood, California. Although
Michel de Mers wrote a wonderful script for a short animated feature based
on my book, the production was never made because another company bought FilmFair
before the project came to fruition.
