note:
When my daughter, Kallie, was a toddler, I told her we'd try to find her a
new pair of shoelaces at the grocery store. She thought this was a hilarious
idea, saying, "You can't buy those things at the grocery store, Mommy!"
It made me think about the crazy kind of shoes that could be sold at different
stores-for example, shoes made of jack-in-the-boxes at the toy store; shoes
made of trumpets at the music store; shoes made of hot fudge sundaes at the
ice cream shop. That's how the idea got started! I really love Dennis Kyte's
sweet and funny illustrations- they're a perfect complement to the text.
